Why is my dog's bald spot red, flaky, and not responding to meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old

Bandit has a bald spot on his left side that has grown since a few months ago we have taken him to a vet and they said it's just seasonal allergies or a skin infection and the hair will grow back and that was last month and there's no hair growing...its flaking and sometimes red also had red bumps on the skin at one time our vet has done nothing about it and the medications they put him on do not work and this is the third time they have put him on it. Do u have any idea what this is??

If the medication your veterinarian has been using isn't working I would actually recommend a biopsy and blood work. Sometimes different endocrine problems can cause hairloss in dogs and this is what the blood work would be checking for. The biopsy I typically would take a piece of the abnormal part where there is no hair, then an area where it is 1/2 hair and 1/2 hairless. This will give you a definitive answer as to what is going on with Bandit. I would discuss this with your veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
