Puppy tired, yelping, and limping after walks. Too much exercise?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 30 days old | 28 lbs

I have a 13 week old Great Pyr/Lab mix that has been extra tired today. Usually no matter how long she’s been in her kennel she’ll run out. 3 times today I’ve opened the kennel & she just laid there not wanting to come out. She’s also yelped like in pain a couple times. Once when i was setting her down after being held & once walking from the car to house she yelped & acted like her paw/leg was in pain. She just started going for walks. 2, 10-20min walks yesteray & today. Too much excervise?

I'm sorry Remi is in pain! The amount of walking you are doing with her is ok. The rule of thumb is five minutes for every month of age max twice a day, so a 15 minute walk twice a day is fine. That being said, each dog is different, and it may be too much just yet for her. She also could have injured herself during the walk, such as straining a ligament, or she could be suffering from a disease called paneostitis. This is a painful and self-limiting condition characterized by limping and lameness. It can be common in large and giant breed dogs. I would rest Remi for the rest of the week. No walks, taking her to potty on a leash only and bring her right back in when she's done. If she is still in pain on Monday, have her seen by a vet. It's very important not to give her any human pain medications, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if give. Good luck, I hope this helps!
