Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 10 months and 2 days old | 9 lbs
We just noticed this while we were giving bear a bath. Any idea what it could be? And do we need to take him to his vet?

Thank you for your question. From your photo, it appears that Bear has a small skin infection. I recommend cleaning it with warm soapy water. You can carefully trim the hair around the lesion to make it easier to clean. Since you just noticed this, it is hard to say if it is something that has been there and is healing, or if it will get worse. I recommend keeping it clean through the weekend and using a cone or e-collar to keep Bear from licking the area. You can apply a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice a day. If it isn't getting better, you should call your veterinarian on Monday to have it evaluated and see if antibiotics are needed. Make sure you wash your hands after you have touched the wound. I hope this information helps, and that Bear heals quickly.

Poor Bear! If just the top layer of the skin has been cut, and it's not long or deep, you can treat it at home yourself. You can gently wash the cut with warm water and and antiseptic soap, and put a bandage over it. Make sure the bandage isn't so tight that it cuts off circulation I would not put neosporin or any topical ointment on it, as Bear might just try to lick it off, and it's not good for him to ingest that. I would keep him from licking at the wound, as that will introduce infection into the area. You may need to put an Ecollar on her to stop her from doing it, which you can get from a pet store. Monitor the cut for signs of infection, which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. If you see any of those signs, you will need to take her into the vet for antibiotics. Hopefully, it will heal fine without any problems :-)
