My stray dog died. Are my dogs safe from parvovirus? How to know?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

Hi! I was taking care of a stray dog and today he died. We were treating his apparently broken leg, and last two days he stopped eating and got very weak. I’m scared he had parvovirose and could possible pass that on to my dogs. How will I know he didn’t have that? Please help! I don’t want my dogs to die!

I’m so sorry to hear about the stray dog. If your dogs are vaccinated for parvovirus then even if the stray had parvovirus your dogs should be protected. If you want to know why the dog died then you can have an autopsy done to find out the cause of death. If no veterinarian is open today then keep the body cool, but not frozen and you can transport to a veterinarian on Monday. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
