I found a bird with a broken wing in my backyard. What should I do?

Hi, i found a bird with broken wings on my backyard. I am not sure about the species. Maybe it is called burung layang-layang or burung walet in Bahasa Indonesia. How should i help the bird ?

Unfortunately a bird with a broken wing will not be able to survive in the wild, even after the fracture has healed. if you would consider keeping it then i would recommend to take him to the vet, if it is a simple fracture there is a special bandage that can be done to fix it.

The best course of action here would be to get this bird to a wildlife rehabilitation center. If you are not able to do this then take him to a nearby veterinarian so his injuries can be assessed. Thanks for reaching out and including photos. This does appear to be a fracture so taken to a wildlife rehabilitation society is best. They can seek veterinary care from there. For now keep warm and offer some food and water. Good luck.

It would be best to try and find a local wildlife rescue near you, or if one isn't available, a local veterinarian to take a look at the bird and assess its injuries. Wildlife centers are best equipped to help properly care for the injured bird and re-released it back into the wild once it's healthy. Keeping the bird in a quiet, dark, cool location is best until you can get care to help reduce stress and strain on its body.

Unfortunately, with a complicated fracture such as that, and if the owl is acting woozy, it is likely in shock and unlikely to survive without veterinary care. If you really want to help save this owl, it's best to find someone to transport it to the nearest veterinarian. If you can do so safely and gently, you may be able to place a gentle tape to stabilize the wing against the body. I'm including a link to a website with some more information on this - but I really want to stress that this bird should be seen by a vet, and without vet care it is very likely to die. If you've found a wild or potentially sick parrot, it would be best to seek out a local wildlife refuge or vet that sees birds in your area ASAP. They can assess the bird for any signs of illness, rehabilitate it and release it back into the wild as needed. If you have any other pet birds, it is best to keep them completely separated in different cages, rooms, etc and clean any objects or wash your hands after handling the possibly ill bird to prevent the spread of illness to any others in your household. Keeping the bird calm, quiet, and eating and drinking may help some until you can find someone to take a look at her.

Check local and state wildlife laws first to make sure you are allowed to keep Angel. Next, contact the local veterinary clinic and ask for the contact information of nearby wildlife rehabilitator. If you are legally prohibited from keeping wildlife, a rehabber will give Angel the best chance at treatment and recovery. If you are allowed to keep Angel, a rehabber should be able to direct you to a veterinarian who may be able to help out. Any discount or assistance would be at the sole discretion of the veterinarian or specialist.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do other than try to keep the bird calm and quiet. I would avoid handling it as birds can pass illnesses to people and other pets. Trying to find a wildlife rehab that can take it ASAP is best!

My baby sparrow gets hurted in her left arm. She can't walk or hop properly. What should I do?
It is possible that Tweety has a broken wing, however, in a 12 day old bird it could also be a "conformational abnormality", meaning Tweety may have been born with one wing that did not develop properly. If you can get her to a veterinarian she can be examined to determine what is causing her to hold her wing that way. They may also want to take an x-ray to get a better look at the bones of the wing. If it is broken a veterinarian will usually splint it or wrap it in a special bandage to allow it to heal. In a young bird it usually only takes around 4-6 weeks to heal from a break. Breaks are usually fixable in birds, either by applying a splint or surgically, it depends how bad it is basically. this will need to be assess and done by an avian vet specialist, if the leg and not the wing is broken then her chances are generally better.
