Why is my spayed 8-month-old dog bleeding vaginally? Is she in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 35 lbs

My dog is bleeding vaginally but was spayed around 4 months old, she is extremely swollen, licking a lot and is scooting on the carpet. She's 8 months now and is just dripping blood.

I am worried that Lilo is in heat. As much as I would like to say that spays always go perfectly, I have seen a case or two where part of an ovary was left by accident. (Ovaries are very tiny in puppies.) But, she is the right age to have a heat cycle and is displaying many of the right signs. See your vet and discuss doing a vaginal swab, hormone blood test, or an abdominal ultrasound to help diagnos the problem for certain. Best of luck to you and Lilo!
