My dog is lethargic, won't eat after heartworm shot. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 55 lbs

I have a 60 lb (Mutt) foster dog that was taken to the vet for his 1st heartworm shot. He is very lethargic, won't eat and now won't even get up. He normally follows me around and sleeps in a crate in my room but won't (can't) get up off the livingroom floor. His nose is dry, his eyes are blood shot. Not sure how to tell if he is running a fever. Just wanted to make sure it was ok until I can call his vet tomorrow

I would take him to the emergency clinic if you can. My main fear is always an allergic reaction which can cause shock and be life-threatening. It may be that Othello just needs some pain medication or a steroid but better safe than sorry.
