Why is my Yorkie dog licking lips, swallowing, and making hiccup motions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 10 lbs

I have no idea how to explain this. I took my 3 year old yorkie out to potty about 30 minutes ago.. brought him back in and he started acting so strange. His stomach felt like it was spasming, he began swallowing constantly and licking his lips. Now, he keeps making a hiccup motion.. but he doesn’t have hiccups. His head extends for a split second and then it relaxes. I’m very concerned. Please help!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are describing sounds as if he is nauseous from something. It is difficult to say what is going on without seeing it in person or on a video. I would withhold food for at least 8 hours and then feed a bland diet of chicken and rice. Feed this at least 3 days beyond the resolution of the symptoms. If these symptoms persist or worsen, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
