My dog has a red, bumpy rash near his genitals. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dogue de Bordeaux | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 115 lbs

I recently noticed this rash close to my dogs genitals...he doesn’t seem to mess with it too much and it doesn’t bother him when I touch it...the bumps are raised and almost scabbed in some spots and just red in others...does it look serious or just give him a good bath and keep an eye on it? he had something similar as a pup but not since he was neutered....

Hello. It looks like Chunk has a bit of dermatitis going on. It may have started out with a little irritation, & with time, a staph infection has become evident. It is always best to see your veterinarian about this, but in the meantime, you can mix a dab or 1% hydrocortisone cream with a dab of triple antibiotic & lightly coat the area twice a day. If it clears up in 7-10 days, great. If no improvement or any worsening signs by early next week, please see your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
