My dog coughs and sneezes when I pet him, should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old

Good day! My dog Toby always sneeze and somehow cough everytime i lay a hand on him. It's only a matter of seconds touching him because he sneezes or coughs after. My other dogs don't experience that everytime i touch them. It's only Toby. I'm worried about it.

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.
