Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 2 years and 8 months old | 80 lbs
My dog (lab/pointer) was outside playing with my daughter and her friend yesterday. They said he might have been chewing on a stick and then noticed him pawing at his face and rubbing it in the cold chicago ground. Last night he would paw his mouth and open all off the way and whimper. I checked his teeth and can't find anything. He ate this morning, but he winced when drinking water. He also will not give kisses. Could he have injured his tongue and I can't see it? Should I take him to the vet?

It is possible he injured his tongue or gums or even deeper into his larynx. I would highly recommend a trip to the veterinarian with a sedated oral exam as it sounds like there is either and injury or remaining portion of the stick. Very often I find them on the roofs of their mouth. Good luck!
