My 6-day-old puppy has a sore on its back. What's the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 35 lbs

I was gone for a few hours and my dog and her litter of puppies were in my living room. Her puppies are 6 days old. When I came back home, one of her puppies had a bad looking sore on his back. What could have been the cause? They don’t have fleas.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! It could be a burn from heating pad or lamp. Or it could be a hot spot from excessive moisture from the mother licking the puppy or lying in urine. Hot spots can crop up quite quickly. Since the puppy is so young it should ideally be seen by a Vet. the fur should be shaved to evaluate the area. If it is a hot spots can heal very quickly. I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best!
