Just got an underweight Great Dane. How can I help her gain weight?

How can I fatten up my great Dane? I just got her and the past owners under feed her.

Just feed her 10-15% more than the recommended amount for her ideal weight, you can feed her 3-4 times a day until she starts putting on some weight then go back to feeding twice a day once she fattens up a little.

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is gorgeous!!! She looks like she is at a healthy weight for her age so I do not think that you need to get her to gain more weight rather you should keep doing what you are doing so that she continues to be at a healthy weight for her age. Keep in mind pups sometimes can show their ribs and that does not necessarily mean that they are underweight unless they are showing excessively. Keep up the good work!

I got a Great Dane pup last Friday she's 12 wks I want to make sure we are feeding her enough. She is getting 2 table spoons of can good mixed w/ 1 & 1/2-2cups of dry food(no grain/fillers). She it's it all in about 5-7 min. Should we give her more?
Congrats on your new puppy! Georgia Bell should be getting a giant breed puppy formulated food, and I would feed her according to the instructions on the label of the food bag. Divide the daily allotment into three equal meals because puppies under six months of age should be fed three times a day (morning, noon, evening). There is no need to feed her a grain free food. Grains are actually beneficial to dogs, and I never recommend feeding grain free food unless the dog has an allergy to grains. In dogs, less than 10% of them actually have a food allergy and the biggest food allergy in dogs is protein not grains. Rarely are dogs allergic to grains, so it's not recommended to leave it out of a growing puppy's diet unless there is a proven allergy to it. I recommend feeding Georgia Bell a high quality giant breed puppy food such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Iams, or Purina ProPlan.

What is the amount of food to feed a Great Dane pup? I give him two cups a day: one in the morning and a half a cup in the afternoon and evening. I was told to increase one cup each month of his age. Is that appropriate?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Oh my Rogue is SO cute!! This is a hard question to answer because it all depends on the food you are feeding and the calories per cup and how Rogue grows. For a Great Dane I recommend a large breed puppy food and using the bag's recommendations for his weight to start. If he is too thin, increase the volume fed and if he is too heavy decrease it. I don't think a simple rule of increase by a cup per month is very accurate. It should be based on his weight, how he is growing and is body condition. It is hard to make a puppy fat and most owners do a good job without too much stress. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

I just took in a rescue last week. He's having an issue gaining weight and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to put weight on him? He appears to be a boxer but we were told he was boxer and Pitt bull. Any advice would be awesome
The best way is to feed him both high quality wet and dry food, give him small quantities up to 5 times a day in the first few weeks, it will help him gain weight faster. having him neutered will also help with weight gain.

My German shepherd is eating less than usual her vet says she's underweight and wants her eating more but she just won't
Feed her a good quality puppy food for German Shepherd dogs. Feed her several times daily, small amounts at a time and more often. Warm up her food, it may make it more attractive. If she still does not gain weight have your vet check her for exocrine pancreas insufficiency. Maybe your vet can recommend a good food for her to gain weight.

What a gorgeous pup! Great Dane puppies have a massive requirement for nutrients so I recommend investing in feeding a really good quality food for giant breed puppies. Royal canin does a really good puppy food which I trust for my own dogs. Don't listen to things like not feeding puppy food, there is no evidence for that. It is actually really important to feed puppy food because a puppy has different needs to an adult. Energy level has more to do with the carbohydrate in the feed rather than protein.

I would recommend using a large breed puppy food. This type of diet will have the specific balance of minerals and vitamins needed for young, growing puppies. Since Danes are a giant breed, their nutrional needs are different than your typical puppy. Some of the brands I usually recommend include Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. Although its a little hard to tell from the photo both of your pups look to be lean with good muscle mass. To assess body condition what you want to look for are a waist behind the ribs when viewed from above, and that you can feel but not see the spine and ribs. Young active dogs are certainly apt to be a bit leaner. You could certainly consider a diet for active large breed dogs, especially for the Dane mix. To figure out how much to feed you need to know two things. First, you need to find out how many calories are in a cup of your current food. This is sometimes written on the bag or you can go online to the foods website and typically find it. It would be written kcal/cup for dry or kcal/can for canned. Second, you need to figure out what the energy requirements for your dogs are. This will be different for different weights of dogs and for dogs with different lifestyles. My Great Pyrenees is a year old and is underweight he eats but isn’t gaining weight. What could I do?
First, I would make sure you feed Dio a puppy food, not an adult food. Second, make sure you are feeding him enough cups of food. Third, make sure to feed a high quality large breed puppy food. A grain free brand like Merrick or Wellness or Taste of the Wild would be great. Even Science Diet Large Breed puppy would be ok. Last, make sure your puppy has had a fecal test run to make sure he doesn’t have worms. A monthly heartworm prevention, like Heartgard or Interceptor, treats parasites too. If your dog is still not gaining, they may need further testing or work up. In addition, adding a probiotic may help as well. I like Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes and Probiotics.
