Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 18 lbs
My cat needs an inhaler every 12 hours, and he really hates it. We adopted him and his brother 8 months ago, at an estimate of 5-7yrs old, and I believe his old owner didn't know about his asthma nor did they treat it. Is there anything we can do to make it easier for him to take? I've thought about a drop of fish oil to make him like the smell of the aerosol chamber but didn't want to risk the inhaler itself due to cost.

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm happy to hear that Jake is in good hands now with an owner willing to treat his asthma! Getting him used to the inhaler and chamber will take some time. Start by offering him treats while holding the mask close to him. Eventually try to get the mask over his mouth for just a second, and gradually increase the duration (you will have to get to several breaths to a minute, depending on the medication required). Again, reward him with treats when he does this. I found a video demonstrating this technique that you might find helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH4k_dOdNbY I hope this helps, and that Jake gets used to the inhaler!
