Is dog tooth extraction routine, or should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years old | 59 lbs

My dog has rotton top back tooth, also an abcess under the eye.I have been to the vets, given antibiotics and offered an appointment to remove the tooth. The vet didn't do an x-ray as he said it was quite obvious. I am concerned as he made it clear that it was going to be difficult and signalled he wasn't very experienced in dog dentistry but he has done it before, I want to know if this is something routine for vets to perform. Or if some may find it difficult meaning a 2nd opinion is needed

This is a common problem so X-rays are not needed. These upper molars have three roots and can be difficult to remove. Your veterinarian is mentioning that he is aware of this. He should be fine extracting the tooth. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Emmy.
