Is my Goldendoodle's protective therapy dog behavior instinctual?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 83 lbs

This really isn't training, it's more of behavior. Cooper isn't a therapy dog but he is really acting like one lately. My mother broke her ankle and Cooper has been very protective and nervous whenever she gets up to do something. He's a goldendoodle and goldendoodles are known for being therapy dogs. Is it in his blood or something? We are just curious Thanks!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What a sweet heart Cooper is! There are some dogs that just have the intuition to pick up on people's pain and grief. I think you could breed for personality traits that would make a dog more likely to be a good therapy dog but it likely isn't genetic. It sounds like Cooper is just a great dog! Have a great night!
