My dog is constipated, gassy, dehydrated & acting weird. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 6 lbs

My dog has chronic constipation and gas. She sometimes pants, has shallow breathing and stares at the wall. She looks for places to hide (under my bed, in the closet...) and won't leave my side. We do not have money for expensive tests. Her diet has been changed to wet food. Also, I haven't seen her drink any water in days and she was extremely dehydrated last weekend. She's pooped once since then, a lot.

Thanks for the question. If Ruby has been dehydrated, this will slow down the movement of food through her colon and lead to constipation. If it is constipation that is making her uncomfortable, there is usually a reason they are becoming constipation, but if you are not able to do any testing, this may be difficult to figure out. Adding a tablespoon or two of canned pumpkin to her diet can help constipation. Hopefully, that will help her be more comfortable. If she doesn't want to drink, sometimes offering ice cubes to eat can help increase their water intake, or putting a little low sodium chicken broth in the water. I hope Ruby is feeling better soon.
