Why is my cat shaking his head after I cleaned his ears? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 10 lbs

My cat is shaking his head violently after I cleaned one of his ear 5 minutes ago. Should I be concerned? What can I do to soothe his ear.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is normal and expected behavior after ear cleaning. You can massage the ear base to try to get the fluid absorbed quicker. This is likely going to go away on its own. If this does not resolve in the next few hours, have Toby evaluated by a veterinarian. Good luck!

I would not be overly concerned about Toby at this time. If he begins to scratch at his ear excessively, has an abnormal discharge or has a head tilt then you will need him to be checked out by your vet. His ear was probably just sensitive to the Q-tip and he should be fine. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck!!
