My dog's skin is black and flaking. Could it be a skin infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 10 lbs

My dog's skin has began to turn black. There are some parts under her tummy that are starting to flake. She had puppies in October 2017 and around December her skin started turning black. I've read about some conditions but I have no idea. She is a Dachshund and Lhasa Apso mixed. She is 1. The last photo is in July 2017 then September 2017 while pregnant and the last one is of her today. Thanks for any help.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the pictures you have provided, I suspect that she is dealing with a skin infection. Below are the products I recommend to treat this. If the skin condition does not improve or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. These products can all be found online quite easily. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. 1. Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. 2. Malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved 3. Welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules 4. Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a skin infection. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
