Dog hit leg, now limping and sore. When should I see the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 months and 29 days old | 55 lbs

While trying to retrieve a packet of vitamins that my dog swiped off the table, I was chasing him around. I stuck out my leg to block him, but he ran into my foot pretty hard. He let out a Yelp and cried. I believe I connected with his right rear leg on the inside. He seems to walk ok, but he won't do it unless I make him. He just wants to lay around and sleep. I understand he's probably sore, but should I be worried enough to take him to the vet? I feel absolutely terrible about this.

Accidents happen, don't be too hard on yourself. Let Beau rest for the night. Restrict his activity to just leash walks for elimination. Monitor for bruising or swelling. If the lameness persists or worsens over the next 24-48 hours, have him examined by your veterinarian
