Why is my puppy vomiting after vaccination? Is it an emergency?

Charlie is adorable! Thank you for posting pictures! I'm so sorry that Charlie is not feeling well after his vaccination. Vomiting after a vaccination is not considered normal, so I would not wait to have him treated. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and have Charlie examined and treated to stop the vomiting with anti-nausea medication. Good luck!     While soreness and some stomach upset can occur after a vaccine, vomiting and having diarrhea that much afterwards is not normal. It would be best to let your vet know right away in case Bolt needs to go in for care, and so that your vet can take precautions to prevent reactions before his next vaccine.

Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Poor guy. It sounds like he may be experiencing a severe vaccin reaction. We treat these with a steroid shot and antihistamine shot. You will need to take him to your vet for treatment for this. B/c of the severity of his condition it is unlikely anything over the counter will help him recover. He also should be tested for parvovirus since he is so young and this is likely his first vaccination. You can try force feeding him some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese and 1-2 tsp of honey or karo syrup to keep his blood sugar up, until you can get him seen. I hope that your pet Charlie is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Best of luck and take care.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Charlie is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Charlie evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

Thank you for using Boop by Petco. I’m sorry Theo isn’t feeling well. This is not a normal vaccine reaction and Theo really needs to go to the vet ASAP. If it is not the vet who vaccinated him make sure to let them know he had a reaction so they can note in his chart and report it to the vaccine company. I hope Theo feels better soon.

My puppy is a pit bull and started having watery diarrhea last night and this morning started throwing up and won't eat please help
This could be from parvovirus or intestinal parasites. Since he’s so small and young I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. He could get dehydrated quickly and that can become life threatening. They will test him for parvovirus and check for intestinal parasite. They will probably give him fluids to prevent dehydration and medication to control the diarrhea. I'm sorry to hear Charlie isn't feeling well. It sounds like he has an upper respiratory infection. This is common for puppies that fly. They don't have a strong immune system and the stress of flying makes them susceptible to everything. I would also be concerned for parvovirus as that is also very contagious. I would take him to a vet right away to diagnose him and get him started on medications. Because he is young he can get worse very quickly. Good luck and kisses to Charlie!

Vomiting after a vaccination is not normal and is a sign of a potentially severe vaccine reaction. It sounds like the vomiting did not occur right after the vaccination, so it may not be related to the vaccination, but vomiting is not considered a normal vaccine reaction. I would recommend taking her in now-they can give medications to lessen the effects of the reaction as well as anti nausea and vomiting medications to help her be more comfortable. Request that they premedicate your pet for vaccine reactions the next time and it may help dampen the effects before they get started. I hope this helps!

That could a normal side effect after vaccination that should last no more than 24hours and be self limiting. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction. This may have nothing to do with the vaccination but it would be best to have him examined and go from there. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction!
