Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 21 lbs
Our 23 lb Russell terrier mix has a lesson on her front right shoulder. It has scanned over a few times, but is generally covered in a light layer of pus. It feels raised a bit above her normal skin level, maybe 1/4 in diameter and 1/8 of an inch raised. She's had it for about a week, not getting any worse, but also not really getting any better. Thoughts?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a couple things such as a sebaceous cyst, a small skin infection, or an are of inflammation from a stick or other poking object. There are also benign warts and nodules like histiocytomas as well as a few more malignant types of skin nodules. Try a little triple antibiotic ointment such as neosporin twice daily (as long as Lucy can’t lick it). If that doesn’t help after a few days, it’s time to see the vet.

The only way to know the cause of the lump is to do a needle aspirate or biopsy. A needle aspirate is a very easy procedure that requires no sedation. A small needle is inserted into the lump, aspirated, and then the cells are examined under a microscope. You could ask your vet if he/she can do an aspirate to determine the cause, especially if you do notice any changes.
