My puppy's broken leg: Will it heal without a second surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 14 days old | 18 lbs

My puppy had surgery almost 3 weeks ago on his femur that broke in the middle. He had a plate and pins put i. He’s 11weeks old so it was tough to limit his mobility and he was active too much. The surgeon said to kennel him for 2 more weeks and see how it’s healing, my question is do you think this will heal without a second surgery. The right is post op the left is from today

With strict rest, this may callous further and improve stability but may not be completely aligned as the plate has moved! Regular monitoring with xrays will be required to investigate if healing is progressive or if additional surgery is indeed necessary

3weeks is quite a short recovery time, there is some evidence of early callous around the fracture but this is still poorly organized. I would also recommend further rest and repeat xrays regularly up until 6weeks before any further intervention is considered. Cage rest should be planned
