My dog has red skin and sores from a shock collar. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered

My dog is required by the animal control and sheriffs office to wear a shock collar for barking. The collar has been turned off as i do not believe in shock collars myself. However today when when playing and loving on him i noticed that his sken was red and there are holes in his skin where the posts were. I just wanted to know what the best plan of action was to care for the wound. The dog is acting perfectly normal other than being sore in the area.

Please trim the fur around the wounds and clean them with antibacterial soap. Once rinsed and dry apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. If you need to use the collar again it needs to no looser around the neck. This should heal in a few days. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Ares.
