My pet has untreatable IBD. What are the end-of-life options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 12 years old | 10 lbs

Can IBD be untreatable or get to a point of that? If so, what do you do?

Yes, IBD can become refractory to therapy. If all measures have been exhausted including steroids, Immunosuppressive therapies, Vit B12 injections, special diets, metronidazole, and sometimes even chemotherapy, then sometimes (although rarely), making a quality of life decision and choosing euthanasia is often the most humane choice. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
