My dog ate ribs and has diarrhea. When should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 80 lbs

My dog got into some food at a BBQ the other day and ate some ribs. I know the potential risks of him doing this, so I have been watching him. He just woke me up to go potty (he never does that in the middle of the night) and he had diarrhea 3 times. He otherwise acts fine. When should I be concerned enough to take him in?

You can change his food to boiled chicken and rice as this is very bland. You can also get probiotics from any pet store to start. If he starts vomiting or has a decrease in appetite, or starts with bloody diarrhea, then he needs to be seen by your vet. If it continues past 48 hours with no improvement, then I would get him checked also
