Why is my old dog peeing blood, scooting, and having accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 6.4 lbs

My dog is experiencing these symptoms: -Hematuria -Rubbing her butt on the floor while crying/barking -Frequent urinating in small amounts -Peeing in spots she has not peed before We gave her trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole for 10 days last month and she got better but now her symptoms are starting again. 3 doctors have said that they couldn’t find anything but one said she might have stones. We don’t want her to go through surgery since she’s old and might not survive it. Please help!

I am so sorry that Puffy is having this issue. I would recommend having an x-ray performed to rule out or in stones. If she has bladder stones then ideally she would have surgery. If she is about 10 years old I wouldn't be concerned about the surgery as long as her physical examination is good and her blood work is good. If she does not have bladder stones I would recommend getting a urine culture performed and potentially an ultrasound of her bladder. The urine culture will definitively rule out a urinary tract infection while the ultrasound will make sure there is no mass in her bladder. I hope Puffy feels better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
