My African grey has a wart-like growth on its face. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 14 years and 2 months old | 2 lbs

My 15 year old African grey has developed a small wart like growth on the side of his face next to the corner of his beak. He is well in himself and eating well as his droppings appear normal. What is it and what would be the best treatment? Thank you.

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. This appears to be a viral papilloma wart. They are almost always benign but there is a slim chance it could be a squamous papilloma which is a malignancy. The viral papillomas will many times regress on their own within a few months. I suggest you take Jack to your vet for an exam. It is up to you whether you want to take him in now or if you want to see if it goes away on it's own first. In the meantime it would not hurt to put him on good immune boosting vitamin like one of these: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/the-missing-link-ultimate-avian-formula-food-supplement https://www.arcatapet.com/avitech-bird-rx-immune-booster-1oz/item/cat/ap00021370.cfm?source=GA-PLA04021370 Hope this helps. Best wishes.
