Dog leaning, stumbling, and struggling to stand. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 12 lbs

Bella isn't doing well at all. She keeps leaning to the side and hanging her head really low. And then when she gets up, she walks backward like she's about to stumble and sits. Then tries to stand up a bit but it's like she really can't. Almost likes she's trying to keep herself balanced and from throwing up at the same time. She's had some small worms in her poop for the past couple of days as well. She's been more lethargic than normal also. Are these symptoms of tape worms or something else?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would say that these symptoms are not consistent with a tapeworm infection and something else. What you are describing sounds as though she has neurological signs. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This could also be what we call vestibular disease. I am not sure how old Bella is but if she is older, then vestibular disease could be the cause of what you are seeing. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
