Could bladder stones cause my dog severe pain or mimic IVDD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

Can bladder stones mimic symptoms of ivd? My female Boston has been diagnosed with crystals in urine and is on antibiotics and perscript food. After 2 days of meds it seemed like she was getting worse. Peeing, pacing and yelping when she would move or jump. Took her back in and vet thinks she also has ivd. Have her pain meds and she seems like worse. Could she have stones that give her that much pain?

I have not had a patient with bladder stones who seemed as painful as what flu describe. However, if she were to be passing a kidney stone (less common than bladder stone) then she could certainly be that painful. Also it could definitely mimic back pain. However, it could not cause limb weakness, so if she was diagnosed with limb weakness then IVDD is likely the cause. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
