My puppy's ears dropped. Is rough play causing ear cartilage damage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 months and 22 days old | 31 lbs

My puppies ears dropped a few weeks ago and haven’t stood since. They were always erect, but now they sit to the sides. She’s very gangly haha and is growing very quickly! There is another dog in the house that is older who likes to play with her, and occasionally will bite on the ears. Is that okay? Does that cause damage to her ears? I’m a little concerned something may have happened and her cartilage is damaged. Thanks!

The ears can stand anytime between 2 and 6 months. Rough play will likely cause no harm, but if you are concerned then separate them if play gets too rough. You can "exercise". The ears by clapping or whistling to get Addison to use them frequently.

Lovely Addison! It is 100% ok for them to play together. It is normal if they gently chew different body parts so I wouldn't worry but I always recommend to monitor the situation. If you can see bruises, scratches, crusts,.. I would suggest to stop them playing so hard but If no visible signs are seen let them play! Please post again on the forum or request a consultation if you would like to discuss it any further.
