My deaf cat's tail wound is spreading. Does she need a vet visit?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

My cat has what I thought was a wound on the underside of her tail which I thought was healing, it has now spread to the top side. She is deaf and get distressed when going to the veterinary practice, can you advise me if this is necessary please?

Poor Missy! Given that this area is now spreading, yes it is necessary to take her into the vet. I understand it may be hard on her, but I would be concerned she has an infection if it's spreading. This can only be treated by a vet. Please take her into a vet on Monday. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I would take Missy into the vet right away. It could have initially be due to an injury from the outside, but that could have developed into an abscess, which has now burst and is draining blood and pus. This has to be flushed out right away, and she will need antibiotics to treat the infection. Please take Missy into a vet right away.

Hi there and thanks for posting! The wound you posted a picture of is a little hard to see, but it does look red, swollen, and draining a bit which isnt good. Although not necessarily an emergency, Molly should be seen as soon as possible for this. If your vet isn't open this weekend or available to get you in today or tomorrow, then going to an emergency vet would be my recommendation. I wouldn't wait until Monday on this one. You will need to see a vet as it will likely need amputation past the infected part to get to healthy tissue. The skin is growing into the side instead or around the tip and the surgery can correct that and have it healed quickly. It is safe to put regular neosporin on it but do not let her lick it and you can keep it clean with soap and water until you get her seen

I would gently clean her tail with an antiseptic soap and warm water, then have her seen by a vet in the morning. If there are puncture wounds, it's likely Sadie was bitten by something causing the hairless, and that can lead to infection. She may need antibiotics to treat the infection, and the vet can prescribed that. Please do not put any neosporin or topical antibiotic ointment on her tail. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. The vet can prescribe oral antibiotics if needed.

I don't know how this happened to our male cat's tail, but this is how it looks now. He's an outdoor cat. Any ideas? Is this surgery worthy or self healing?
This looks like is may be a bite wound abscess that ruptured. Ideally, it should be addressed by your veterinarian. Surgery may be indicated to clean and flush the wound. Antibiotics and pain medication may also be indicated. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. You may need to confine him indoors until he is healed.

Hi, my cat Tammy has an open wound which she just gotten today.. she was a stray cat and we took care over her every since so she has the habit of going out almost everyday for a few hours before coming back, which we discovered she gotten her wound.
I would recommend a vet visit for Tammy, given the location of this wound she will likely need some anabiotic's to prevent infection. Depending on if it appears to be a bite wound when the vet examined her they may recommend pestering her rabies vaccine as well. Good luck and thank you for using Boop by Petco

My cat has had this wound I noticed it last night and I don't know if my cat needs to go to the vet or not I'm starting to really worry about her and think she will need a vet to help is there anything I can do in the mean time to help her
I think you're definitely on the right track with planning a vet visit. If have her seen to make sure the wound doesn't need surgical attention and medications to encourage healing. Wounds can often have a lot of depth around them called "dead space". As the wounds try to heal that area can fill up with inflammatory fluid and eventually turn to pus, causing infection. In the mean time, you can always find a baby onesie or even a tiny dog T shirt for her to wear if it will cover the wound until you have her seen. It may help keep her from licking the area excessively, which can cause additional trauma, inflammation, and infection. Or you can order a soft cone on amazon or pick one up at your local pet store to prevent the self trauma. Good Luck!

Hello. Tail wounds are notoriously difficult to heal. A slow healer is not unexpected however if the scab appears inflamed or infected it should be seen. I would leave the E-collar on until it is completely healed. Good luck with Archemedies.

That appears to be infected. I recommend to have Noelle examined by the veterinarian. Infections can spread to the blood stream and it sounds like she is in pain as well. she will likely need the hair clipped away, the area cleaned, an antibiotic, a pain medication and an elizabethan collar to protect the area from further wounds. Try to have her examined within the next 24 hours. I hope she starts feeling better quickly!

Would you happen to know if my cats tail is broken and needs to go to the emergency room asap or just keep an eye on it and apply Neosporin to the wound. My cat got his tail stick in the door when I was closing it and it scraped his fur off the tip.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to tell is his tail is broken from these pictures. I would have to examine the tail in-person in order to tell this. The wound does look quite deep though and it's definitely possible that it was broken. These injuries tend to be vary painful, so I would consider going to the ER vet if he seems very guarded and not interested in food - these are signs of severe pain. Otherwise, as long as it's not bleeding profusely, this injury can wait until your regular vet is open tomorrow. For now, you should flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because cats tend to hate water getting sprayed on them. I recommend having someone help you with this and wrapping Alexander in a towel to make sure the wound gets flushed well.
