Why is my dog backward sneezing after getting a nasal vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 45.5 lbs

We have just adopted an 11 year old beagle male. He was given his vaccinations on Tuesday, including the nasal vaccine. He had some backward sneezing when we brought him home, but tonight he has had a few episodes of it. It does stop after we massage him. Is it a side effect of the vaccine or did he maybe pick something up from the vet or shelter? Will giving him a reactive tablet help. He weighs 45.5lbs

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I have seen this happen with several patients receiving the intranasal bordetella vaccine. It is likely that the vaccine has caused some irritation in the nasopharyngeal area. This will likely resolve on its own. If it becomes much worse or does not go away, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
