Why are my chickens gasping and stretching necks after worming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

I have 3 Isa Brown hens, 1 of which has been stretching her neck and gasping and squeaking. I have treated her for gapeworm twice and she doesn't seem to be getting any better. Now it appears to have spread to the other 2. How long does it take for worming medication to work? I have used Avitrol plus. Or could it possibly be a respiratory infection?

Hi and thank you for your question, It does sound like a respiratory infection, possibly viral. I would involve an avian/poultry vet to have some samples tested. If you have more chicken please keep those separated. If it is viral it will not respond to antibiotics, but some recover on their own. Regards
