My dog has chronic leg pain, meds failed. Is euthanasia an option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 95 lbs

I have a 4 yr old Rhodesian Bulldog mix. He has had back leg / feets issues for 3.5 yrs and has had toes removed. Now he falls , not real weight bearing ( trys to walk on front legs only ) in pain , depressed . I have sought out 2 vets through out the last 3.5 yrs. He is now being treated with Gabapentin300 mg 2x a day with no relief. Is it unreasonable to ask for euthanasia or shpuld I seek out a 3rd opinion? My heart is breaking!

Yes, euthanasia would be a very valid option in Reds case, persistent pain that does not respond to medication is definitely reason enough to consider releasing him. Well done in approaching such a brave decision on behalf of Red
