What are these brown spots on my dog's teeth that won't brush off?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 20 lbs

Ace has a brown-ish spot on a few of his teeth. Not sure if it’s dirt but a while ago I brushed his teeth and it sort of faded away. Now that I brush his teeth it doesn’t seem to go away. I’m curious to what it is and how he got it. I suppose through his diet? We give him a small amount of shredded cheese on his meal but I’m not certain. Thanks

That looks like the start of plaque and staining. You may not be able to brush that off as it usually requires a scaler and polisher to remove. It is normal over time for that to happen and it is just him constantly eating and chewing, the same as us. Over time more will develop on all the teeth and will need them clean, but for the now, the gums are healthy and there is no sign of an infection so just try to keep brushing as often as you can
