Is a puppy with staph infection safe to bring home with young kids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

Hi, we were all ready to pick up our new Australian Shepard tomorrow, but the owners told us that he had a spot on his skin, took him to the vet and said it was staph infection and gave him antibiotics. I have a 4 and 6 year old and I don't think it is a good idea to still get the puppy, especially after only being on antibiotics for 1 day. Is staph infection a big concern or am I just overreacting?

Staph infections on dogs skin are a different type of bacteria compared the staph we get. It is possible to be contagious but very rare and mostly in immunocompromised such as though going through chemo. I think you are safe to still go get the puppy as it will be fixed within a week
