Is my 4-month-old puppy safe around a dog with treated roundworms?

If my friend got a rescue dog who has roundworms and is being treated - is it okay for my 4 month old puppy to be around him

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! Cooper could get the roundwroms from your friends dog if he eats her stool. Hopefully that won't happen. If your puppy is on heartworm prevention then he is also getting dewormed as well. I hope this helps!

    Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If you have other dogs in the house, they could potentially come in contact with the roundworm eggs in Journey's feces and get it that way. There is the potential for the roundworms to be passed to humans as well. Ensure you are properly cleaning your hands when handling feces or cleaning up feces from Journey. You can start a deworming medication such as Bayer Quad Dewormer, which can be purchased at Petco. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. If there is no resolution, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Journey and test her feces to see if there are any other worms present that need to be treated.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Round worms are passed fecal-orally. So your friends dog would have to ingest Rogan's stool. Just clean up after him we'll and everything should be fine! I hope this helps and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! In order for Jim to get round worms from your friends dog he would have to eat his stool. Transmission is fecal oral. So as long as Jim doesn't eat poop he should be fine. Also if he is on monthly heartworm prevention that also is a monthly dewormer. I hope this helps!

Thank you for your question. If you have treated Dot with a dewormer for roundworms from the pet store, are cleaning up her fecal material and washing hands, then you are doing about everything you can do. That being said, fresh fecal material is not infectious. It takes 30 days for the eggs to become infectious. So if you have not had Dot this long, it is not a concern, but that is why you don't want to leave the feces laying around. Also, I recommend you bring in a stool sample to your first veterinary visit so they can check for parasites. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Unless she has feces on her hair and if she defecates when around other dogs, she will not pass on the worms just by playing with other dogs. However, you cannot say for sure whether or not she has microscopic eggs stuck to her fur or if she will defecate around the other dogs. I would play it safe and finish off the deworming medication and recheck the stool in 7 days (from starting the medication) before socializing her with any other dogs. If she defecates and you pick it up, there is no way to tell if you got every microscopic egg off the ground. If she does defecate outside, it is recommended to remove the top 8 inches of soil from the area to ensure you have removed all eggs. I would also recommend regularly cleaning her bedding so that she does not re-infect herself and that you are using a bleach solution (3 cups bleach to 1 cup water) to spray surfaces down. Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. It is possible that little Billy has roundworms, but with just common sense precautions, your family will be fine. Parasites are sometimes a part of pet ownership, so as long as everyone remembers to wash their hands after playing with Billy, & especially before eating, all will be fine. It was a good idea to crate him until a fecal analysis can be done, but once the appropriate wormer is given you can relax. Take care.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Charlie has roundworms and that he seems to enjoy eating his feces! As gross as it may be, it is OK if he does this, since he is receiving a deworming medication. These medications work to kill the worms in his gastrointestinal tract, so the adult worms are dead when they are passed into his feces. Depending on the type of dewormer, it may target parasite eggs as well, in which case he should be fully covered. I recommend asking your veterinarian if the deworming medication he is taking covers all life-stages of the parasites. If it does, it should kill everything from eggs to adults, meaning anything that Charlie eats is already dead and cannot re-infect his gastrointestinal tract. Obviously, ideally he would not have the opportunity to eat his feces, but I understand this is difficult to prevent. Best of luck with your new puppy, and I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It sounds like Koga has roundworms. The eggs of intestinal parasites are shed in his poop not from his fur. You need to clean up the stools as soon as he goes to prevent contamination of the environment. Your son should be ok as long as he isn’t eating the poop. Just make sure to wash his hands after he plays with the puppy or before he eats. You will need to treat Koga twice (3 weeks apart) and the you should be all set. Good luck and kisses to Koga!

Intestinal parasites are spread in the feces of infected animals so as long as you sister is picking up after her dogs your dogs should be fine. This is a roundworm. He is old enough to give pyrantel a safe dewormer that is for roundworms and hook worms. That dewormer is inexpensive. You may be able to purchase it at your pet or feed store depending on where you live. Otherwise your veterinarian can deworm him. Proton should be dewormed every two weeks until a stool sample comes back negative. When he is old enough to start heartworm medication that also will prevent another parasite infection. Please keep the children away from his poop and wash their hands and yours after handling Proton. People can get roundworms but it is not common with normal hygiene.
