Dog on Baytril for pyometra, regurgitating. Can it help pneumonia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 18 lbs

Hello, my 12 y/o is on 34mg daily of Baytril for pyometra. Lacking appetite, we've been giving her a liquid diet. To comfort her, we hold her upright during feeding as you would a baby. On Day 7 of antibiotics, she started regurgitating mucus with clear fluid after drinking water from her bowl. Yesterday, food particles began to appear at times. She keeps pedialyte via syringe down, which makes me fear for megaesophagus. Will see vet, but if aspiration pneumonia occurs, would Baytril help? Thanx

Yes Baytril can help both in case of pyometra and aspiration pneumonia. Dose would depend on weight so I cannot really tell. Unfortunately though a check up is needed as pyometra could be resolved surgically in most of the cases. Megaoesophagus would require more investigations (ideally radiographs) to be diagnosed properly. Vomiting could be secondary to systemic infection or could have other origins (not easy to determine without more clinical informations at this stage). Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

I am so sorry that Lee is going through this. Any type of antibiotics can cause an upset stomach where they vomit. The concern with any time an animal in vomiting can be aspiration pneumonia especially if Lee is having rapid shallow breaths. I would recommend calling your veterinarian today and having them see Lee. They can listen to Lee's lungs to make sure they sound clear and they can potentially change the antibiotics so hopefully Lee stops vomiting. I hope Lee feels better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
