My guinea pig coughed twice. Is it serious? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Guinea Pig coughed twice today, but hasn't coughed since then. I put my ear up to her chest, and didn't hear anything unusual. But I'm worried, I haven't the money to take her to the vet, but I'm worried. Is she ok, am I just overreacting? Or should I do something about it?

A clean cage is the most important thing you can do, as the ammonia from the urine causes a lot of irritation to the respiratory tract. Monitor closely for any more coughing or sneezing, and if this occurs she will really need to see a veterinarian for possible respiratory tract infection. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
