My dog's poop is pale. What causes light-colored stool and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 70 lbs

Sorry for the graphic picture, but I know this isn’t normal. What could be the cause of this? It’s no way she got into something she wasn’t supposed to and I don’t know what to do about it. Thank you

This is just pale feces. All it means is that there was not as much bilirubin in the stool as normal. This can happen normally for a variety of reasons. If you just noticed this once and Coco is otherwise acting normal, then I would not be concerned and would just monitor for any other changes. If this persists for more than three days and she is having other signs of illness (i.e. decreased appetite, vomiting), then it would be best to take her to your vet for an evaluation, because it could indicate a digestive disorder. I hope that helps and all is well with Coco.

I believe this is a duplicate question. Yes the color is a bit paler than normal, which is often a sign of dehydration. Try adding in water to her diet by mixing in wet/canned food. This should resolve the issue. As long as everything else is normal with her, then there is no need for serious concern here. However, if you are noticing other symptoms such as weight loss, lack of appetite, etc, then she may have an underlying issue. At that time a vet visit is recommended to check her pancreas.

Coco is adorable! Thanks for posting pictures. You didn't mention is she eats her own stool or other dogs' stool and if this is a new behavior. I am attaching a link to a handout below that discusses stool eating as well as possible reasons and treatments. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1613 If this is a new behavior, then I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Coco and perform a fecal sample to evaluate for any problems. If Coco is eating her own stool, then you can discuss one of the food additives like ForBid that can be mixed into her food. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and gives you some ideas. Thanks for using PetCoach.
