My dog is lethargic and won't eat after surgery. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 11 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

My dog had a lump surgically removed Monday afternoon. Yesterday, she had to go back to the vet to have some stitches done again as they fell out and was put under light anesthesia. Today, she will not eat and has had very little water. She is very lethargic and seems to have no interest in anything at all. Is this something she should be taken to the vet for immediately or can it wait for the vet to visit tomorrow afternoon?

If she has been like this for more than 24 hours, then it would be best to take her to the vet. She may be reacting negatively to her medication and need treatment to get better. If she is currently on medication, then it's best to stop it at this time until you are able to speak with your veterinarian, or have her seen by a veterinarian. If you have further questions or need further clarification, then you may consider having an online consult with one of our vets on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This way, you can send unlimited pictures and have a text conversation with a vet. I hope that helps and Molly gets better soon.

Given that all of Greg's medications require food to take and he's not eating, I wouldn't wait until tomorrow to see a vet, I would take him in one now. He may need injectable medications. Please take him into a vet immediately.
