Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 17 lbs
Hi. I have two cavalier King Charles Spaniels, both male 1 year olds. One of them has a lot of hair loss on the chest area and the other has a little. There are little red dots around the area as well. I’ve checked for fleas which we’ve never had in our area and couldn’t find any. My husband has sprayed the lawn for black beetle and I’m wondering if it might be that causing it as they do lay on the grass a lot. Any advice? Thanks Julie

I'm not sure if the beetle spray would have caused this, but it's possible depending on the ingredient used and concentration. For the most part these sprays are usually some formulation of a pyrethrin, which is only irritating to the skin at high concentrations. However, the fact that they both have signs of irritation and hair loss in this area is very suspicious of a contact allergy/irritant. I would look for any other potential causes of this and try to remove it while the dogs are recovering. For now, it's best to wash the affected area with cool water and dog shampoo. You can flush the area with cool water daily to help provide relief and keep them from getting skin infections. Once the skin is not red anymore, you'll know they are healing and will likely grow their hair back within a month or so. It's also possible that this is the start of a mange infestation. If they are itching a lot and not getting better over the next week, then it will be best to take them to the vet for an evaluation. I hope that helps and they get better soon.
