My dog has fleas. How to treat, protect my home, and are they harmful?

We just found out today my dog has fleas. Not a lot. We found out after he was at the groomers and she had to spray him. Please advise how they contract fleas, what we have to do to the house to protect it from the fleas and are they harmful to us? I suspect I have to take him to the Vet for sure but any information now is super appreciated. Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 7 months and 6 days old | 30 lbs
