Why is my dog's spay incision red with a blister months later?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | spayed

My female dog has a blood blister with a red ring around it. It’s right where her incision was to be spayed. It’s been a few months since she has been spayed.

The sutures take months to fully dissolve and it may be a reaction associated with the remaining suture. It could also be unrelated and be a bite wound. It seems very inflamed and possibly infected. I would have your vet check it to see if antibiotics are needed and what the cause is

Hi, It could be a reaction where the suture knot is, it takes longer to the knot to dissolve. I would follow up with the vet to confirm. Sometimes the vet can even see and feel the remains of the knot and try to cut it off or consider support with local/systemic antibiotics . Good luck
