Just moved to Phoenix: Best flea & heartworm prevention for my dog?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

We recently moved to Phoenix, AZ. Please advise what flee / heart worm preventative is best for this region for our dogs. ( Min Pin, 17 lbs ; dachshund 16 lbs).

For heat worm prevention, I recommend Heartgard Plus. You can get it via prescription from your vet. As for flea treatment, I recommend Advantage or Revolution. They are monthly spot on treatments and are excellent products. You can also get them from your vet's office. I would find a local vet for your dogs so you can get these medications. Good on you for getting this done!

Congratulations on your new dog! I like Revolution if you are looking for a topical product. It consistently works well and is well tolerated. If you like the idea of an oral product better, I like Trifexis (it’s another all in one product). Sometimes though the pets can smell the Trifexis and they won’t eat it. In that instance, I like Simparica and Interceptor. My personal preference is oral products. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

What is the best heart worm and flea prevention
Personally, I like Trifexis very much - it covers fleas, heartworms, and intestinal parasites and is extremely effective. If you need something that covers ticks as well, then I would suggest Nexgard or Bravecto for fleas and ticks, along with Heartgard or Sentinel for heartworm prevention :)

Love his name! That is awesome! I would recommend Revolution or Advantage Multi. I personally like Advantage Multi better. Any product containing a heartworm prevention is a prescription item so you need to get your vet to either dispense the product or write you a script. I hope this helps. Best of luck with your move!

Hi, we live in the Canary Islands and would like to know what is the best prevention for heartworm in dogs as there are many mosquitoes here at the moment. Is a topical solution better than a tablet? Thankyou for any advice.
The dog should be heartworm tested and then started on a prevention, if negative. Heartgard, Interceptor, and Sentinel are all oral medications that work well with preventing heartworms. You should also treat him with a flea/tick prevention. I like oral NexGard, Bravecto, or Credellio instead of the topical spot on solutions.

Fleas: Revolution or Advantage spot on treatment. If you wanted to use a tablet instead, I'd recommend Comfortis or Nexgard. Worms: Panacur or Drontal (available by prescription only from the vet. Parvovirus: Vaccines. Prevention of skin cancer: Use of dog safe sunscreen when out in the sun a lot and providing shady areas for them in the yard.

If you have a tick problem I recommend Heartgard for heartworm prevention and bravecto for fleas and ticks. That is the most economical combination of oral medications at the PetCo clinics. Trifexis doesn’t do ticks so you would need another product as well. I prefer not to use a collar or topical for flea and tick prevention, especially if you have children around. There are several medicines to choose from, but you will need a current heartworm test and a prescription from your vet for the medicines. You can look into Heartgard or Sentinel for monthly heartworm prevention or Proheart 6 is a 6 month injection for heartworm prevention but you will need a separate product such as Nexgard or Bravecto for flea and tick control

How to prevent heartworm for dogs
Heartworm disease is completely preventable dogs. There are now multiple options for heartworm preventative is available to pet owners. Most often these preventatives are given orally once a month or sometimes applied topically once a month. There are options now also for injections that last about six months. It just depends on what your veterinarian has available. It is usually recommended to give heartworm preventative year-round but this may vary depending on where in the country you live. Any dog who has not been on heartworm preventative, should be tested for heartworms prior to starting prevention. And then heartworm testing is recommended every one to two years while on heartworm preventative.

You are very welcome! For most pets, Revolution is fine for heartworm prevention unless your area is experiencing very high levels of heartworm exposure or immunity to the product. Call your veterinarian and ask if there is a specific reason that he/she recommends an additional heartworm prevention. It’s always best to gather all the information! What is recommended for flea and tick, specifically deer tick) prevention as well as heartworm in dogs and cats that live together. (Kids in the house too) Bravecto for the dog and revolution for the cats was recommended but it looks like Bravecto
I would recommend the new product Simparica for flea and tick control (prevents 5 different tick species, including brown dog tick) and Heartgard for heartworm prevention. Then revolution for the cat for heartworm and flea prevention since there is no tick preventative available for cats.
