Why is my dog's paw twitching, not playful, but shows no pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

I have just brought my dog in from he garden as he wouldn’t walk. He was holding his hind leg in the air and trying to lick it I think. He has started to improve and will now walk/run, he’s not limping on it from what I can tell. However he isn’t as playful as normal & his paw is still shaking/twitching, nowhere near as much as previous. I can move his leg/paw etc and he shows no sign of pain. It almost looks like cramp. He isn’t showing any signs of pain but he isn’t up for playing etc

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sorry to hear this happened to Scrappy. Did you check the bottom of his foot to see if there is a sticker or splinter in his paw? If not, please check that. If you don't see anything there I suggest you just rest him for a few days to see if the symptoms resolve/improve. If not, then get him to your vet for an exam. I am a bit worried based on your description that he may have injured his cruciate ligament in his knee. He wouldn't necessarily show pain when you move the leg. You need your vet to manipulate the knee is a certain fashion to check for this type of injury. There is no harm in giving it a few days to see if it resolves. He could just have a mild sprain/strain. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
