My dog is in heat. Is her lethargy, restlessness, and whining normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Newfoundland | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 120 lbs

We have a 12 month old Newfoundland who’s currently in heat and she’s totally out of sorts. This morning she was very lethargic but we managed to take her out on the lead for a short stroll and she perked up. I know it might sound silly but she’s not sitting in the usual places she would in the garden when she’s out. She whinges a lot too and can go from being lethargic to very restless. Is this normal?

Poor Roxy! It doesn't sound silly at all! You know her better than anyone and it definitely sounds like a change. This is likely just her hormones being a little out of whack. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned. If she gets to the point where she is always whining or lethargic or a change in appetite, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do an exam to ensure nothing else is going on. I hope this helps!
