My dog has red skin and scratches constantly. What home remedies help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 15 years old | 25 lbs

My dog scratches his skin a lot.He has lots of red dots and red skin. My vet told me one day he has allergy to spring plants, but this is not normal,as we are in winter now. I would like to find something like a cream or whatever as a first Aid.I am a bit worried because he looks really stressed. Thank you.

Poor Hacker! He could have allergies to a variety of things throughout the year. I would give him Benadryl twice a day and also you can by Benadryl spray or cream to help. I would also put a cone on him to prevent any licking. Finally, you can purchase a medicated shampoo and bathe him every 48-72 hours. I like duoxo chlorhexidine or dechra miconahex+triz shampoos. If these home remedies don't work, then I would recommend to have your vet look at him as he will likely need oral antibiotics and possibly a stronger allergy medicine. I hope this helps. It sounds like he could have some allergies with a secondary skin infection. He really should be seen by a vet to diagnose and treat. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, and or culture to help diagnose. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, hypoallergenic diet, and/or other medications. You could also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, and add Free Form Snip Tips to his diet to see if that helps keep his skin and coat healthy. If you can't take him to a vet, you might be able to find a mobile vet that can come to your house to treat him. Also make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, or Advantage to prevent fleas and ticks.
