My chubby cat has dry stools. Is more wet food the answer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

2 year old male cat. Eats dry food with some wet food on top. Stools are long, chopped off and not very moist. Worried he's straining or constipation to a degree. Drinks water, but not as much as our other cat. He's also a little chubby! Please....any ideas?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What you describe is actually a common issue. There are a few things you can try. This is likely to resolve just by increasing the amount of liquid he consumes and an easy way of doing this is by increasing the amount of wet food and decreasing the amount of dry food or just switching to a wet food diet. You could consider feeding him canned Science Diet metabolic weight management to achieve weight loss. Good luck!
